Tregian's new findings - A new recorder book from 1600
Andreas Böhlen
In this program the English musician and recusant Francis Tregian (born 1574) takes centre stage. Known as the copyist of several celebrated music manuscripts from around 1600 – including the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book – in this program we follow Francis on an imaginary journey through Europe collecting music for recorder. The recorder, at the time very much a consort instrument, is used as a solo instrument in this program, alongside the lute and harpsichord. This rather typical baroque setting brings some of the ensemble Renaissance music to the Baroque. Also typical for solo performances of polyphonic music at the time was the addition of variations and diminutions. On his European journey Francis Tregian would have encountered a wide range of regional styles, each with its own distinctive language of embellishments. Andreas Böhlen and Niels Pfeffer follow this imagined path, absorbing and reinterpreting the diverse styles and aesthetics.
